We regularly receive feedback from members, with many comments focusing on cell phone use usage around the facility. While smartphones have become an integral part of daily life for many of us and can enhance workouts (through music, fitness apps, etc.), their use requires consideration in a shared space.
The following is a highlight of some of the most commonly identified areas of issue. We would kindly request you take a few minutes to read through this and if you desire, review our member handbook for more detail.
For Cell Phone Users: Responsible Phone Use
Cell phones can be valuable tools for enhancing your workout our time spent at the facility. Fitness apps, music, and workout videos can boost motivation and track progress. However, it’s crucial to be mindful of those around you. Consider these points:
- Phone Calls: All phone calls should be handled in the lobby or another designated area. No one wants to overhear your conversation as it is disturbing to others’ workouts.
- Volume Control: Always use headphones, maintaining a low volume that won’t disturb others. Refrain from using the speakerphone, and please avoid singing along to your music.
- Equipment Sharing: When someone is parking on equipment seemingly staring at their phone for an undue length of time, it can be extremely frustrating for other users. If using equipment while on your phone, be considerate of those waiting.
- Selfies and Videos: We understand that many of our members want to share their experience with family and friends. While we do allow for this, it is ONLY if others are not in the shot without express consent.
- Private or semi-private spaces: Privacy is essential in locker rooms, as well as in our hot tub and dry sauna. Even seemingly harmless actions, like scrolling through your phone, can lead to the unintended capture of images or videos, whether due to malicious intent or software malfunction. Moreover, the use of phones in these spaces can undermine the overall experience of relaxation and privacy for everyone. To ensure privacy and safety, phones must be stowed away at all times in these areas. Any tasks requiring phone use should occur outside of these spaces. Individuals using phones in photo or video modes (including FaceTime, Snapchat, Instagram, etc.) will face membership termination due to the serious invasion of privacy this poses.
For Those Waiting for Equipment
We understand that waiting for equipment can be frustrating. If someone is on their phone while using equipment you need, try these approaches:
- Polite Request: A simple and courteous request to share the equipment can often resolve the situation. For example, try saying: “Excuse me, would it be alright if we shared the equipment between sets?”
- Inquire About Timeline: If the person seems engrossed in a workout, ask politely: “How much longer will you be needing this? I’d appreciate using it afterwards.”
- Seek Staff Assistance: If you’re uncomfortable approaching the individual, or the issue persists, don’t hesitate to ask our staff for assistance.

By showing consideration for one another and being mindful of personal space, we can collectively create a positive and productive environment. Let’s work together to ensure a welcoming and functional facility for everyone, with or without our phones in hand.
